Walk into our classroom on any given morning this July and you'll see it: a five-year-old saving a seat for her friend before she even takes off her backpack. A seven-year-old showing a newer camper how to work the marble run because he remembers what it felt like to not know anyone on day one. This is what six weeks together does to kids. We're winding down our summer camp session here at 2133 Fairview Ave, and honestly, the friendships that have formed this year are some of the sweetest we've seen.

Why Summer Friendships Hit Different

During the school year, kids are often grouped by age or grade, and there's a schedule pulling them from one thing to the next. Summer camp is looser. Kids get long stretches of unstructured play, shared meals, and the kind of boredom that actually forces creativity and connection. When a four-year-old and an eight-year-old end up building the same block tower for forty-five minutes, something real happens between them. They're not classmates because a district drew a line on a map. They're friends because they chose each other, day after day, from 8:00 in the morning until 2:30 in the afternoon.

For young kids especially, this matters more than we sometimes give it credit for. Learning to share a favorite toy, negotiate whose turn it is, or comfort a friend who scraped a knee builds emotional skills that no worksheet can teach. Augusta families know how fast the summer flies, and watching a shy kid come out of their shell because a friend included them in a game is one of the real gifts of this season.

The Confidence That Carries Into Fall

Here's what we notice year after year: kids who make solid friendships over the summer walk into the fall school year with more confidence. They've already practiced the hard stuff, like introducing themselves to someone new, working through a disagreement, or being brave enough to ask a peer to play. Those are skills that carry them straight into September, whether they're heading back to us or off to a Richmond County elementary school. A child who has a friend already in the building walks in taller. That's just true.

Our summer camp runs through July 24, so we've still got a little time left to soak in these last weeks of block building, water play, and backyard science experiments together.
